Coleman Street & High Street



HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:

Coleman Street
G.D Coleman who served as Superintendent of Publics Works from 1833, designed many of the settlement’s finest buildings. He built three residences for himself on the street that now bears his name. the first was at 3 Coleman Street, where he lived until 1841, where the present Peninsula Hotel and Shopping Centre is located.

High Street
High Street was the first street to be constructed in Singapore in 1819 by the first town planner, Lieutenant Henry Ralfe, who was also an artillery officer in East India Company. High Street used to be the most import street in the city and was the main shopping centre before Orchard Road overtook it.
